Steve Jobs - Into the Mystic

Steve Jobs – Into The Mystic
I learned yesterday that innovator Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, has resigned from his position as Apple’s CEO.  In an article written by Mikaela Conley and Kristina Fiore, Steve Jobs’s resignation letter to Apple’s board of directors is quoted:  “I have always said that if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.”

I read that article on my iPad.

The first computer I ever bought was an Apple in the early 90’s.  I do not recall the model, but my Mac desktop computer was one of the first to have a color monitor (it was swank).  It also had a microphone that could record around 30 second sound bites.  I remember I recorded “Into The Mystic” by Van Morrison with it so that when my computer booted up, it would play the first 30 or so seconds of the song.  (You have to keep in mind that there was no iTunes then, so that was epic.).  Whenever someone in my dorm would use my computer (which was just about every day) I would make her record something using the microphone.  The one I recall distinctively is my friend Liz’s.  She was pretending to be a policeman on CB radio as she said: “Breaker one nine I just spotted a four-nine-two-four-two (Hillsdale’s zip code and nickname for someone we knew) headed down route twelve (road that leads to Hillsdale) trying to do a sixty-nine (I’m not explaining this) *kkkuuuurrrrtt* (sound effect) over.”  (College—we were such idiots.)  I wrote my papers on that Mac.  It helped me earn a degree.

I have had several generations of iPods.  They helped me get in shape and I listened to one for motivation while I ran my first road race.

I wrote my first novel on my MacBook in 2008.  Since then, I have written four more with several other novels in various stages of completion.  Now I have a MacBook Pro and I have used it to publish my first novel, start my own company, and design this website and blog.

I don’t know what the future holds for you, Mr. Jobs, but I hope it’s something like the lyrics of that Van Morrison song I once loved:

"We were born before the wind
  Also younger than the sun
Ere our bonny boat was won as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic”

I have two more words for you, Mr. Jobs: Thank you.
